Most horse owners don’t just have "pets" but have a partner in
performance. Soundness is so very important and can be very difficult to
maintain, especially in experienced performance horses. Even if your
horse is completely sound regular monthly or seasonal treatment can help
to keep your horse at its highest competitive level.
Horses usually love to be treated with acupuncture. They relax right
into their treatments. Sometimes they will look behind them as if to
say, "Hey! Who is back there doing stuff to me?" Other signs that the
treatment is working include yawning, droopy eyes, lowering of the head
and neck, chewing, a change in breathing, and a droopy lower lip. When
horses are finished with treatment they usually perk up and become more
aware and interested in their surroundings.
I like to watch a horse go on the lunge before treatment as well as
after, given the horse is able, for the first 3 treatments or so. Many
horses have an immediate response to the treatment. Sometimes horses’
symptoms are worse right after treatment and then become much better
within 72 hours of treatment. This is actually very good as it is part
of the healing process.
